Islamic State.
Holocaust.
Most of the time I'm left dry-eyed. This time I wasn't. An email came into my inbox. I read, looked at the photos, and was crying.
I don't know what it was. But because I was touched, I would like to share the email I received.
My suggestion: when something touches you, share it.
In this case, there was nothing exceptional in the email for anyone concerned about ISIS, now Islamic State. Hundreds of thousands fleeing. Thousands trapped on a mountaintop. Men slaughtered. Women enslaved.
The email ended with photos. Nothing gruesome or horrific - except that I suddenly knew, in my heart, what I was seeing. Holocaust.
Here is Valerie's email:
PRAY FOR THE PEOPLE
OF IRAQ
Dear Friends,
Men, women and children are being wiped out in Iraq by the tens of thousands. This is a well-articulated and well-documented theological worldview determined to dominate “infidels” and, if necessary, wipe them off the face of the earth in order to establish the power and grandeur of a radical vision of Islam. While hundreds of thousands of refugees have been fleeing into Kurdistan, around 40,000 Yazidis and some Christians are trapped on Mount Sinjar.
Parents are throwing their children to their deaths off the mountain rather than see them die of thirst or be taken into slavery by IS. In a recent incident, 1,500 men were executed in front of their wives and families. When the men are killed, captured women and children are enslaved to be used for sex, deployed as human shields in battle zones or sold to be used and abused as their new owners see fit.

Whether you think of yourself as Christian,
Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu, Agnostic, Atheist
or call on other powers, please pray for the plight
of the people of Iraq and the defeat of the Islamic State.
“First they came for the communists,
and I did not speak out—
because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists,
and I did not speak out—
because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I did not speak out—
because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews,
and I did not speak out—
because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me—
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.”
